Can Direct Tv Trace Satellite Recievers?
This is my site Written by Installer on January 12, 2010 – 8:11 pm

I work at a condominium and they changed cable providers about a year ago. All the old direct tv equipment was left and now they are getting rid of it all.

I grabbed a few High Definition receivers to sell them because it was better then going to the trash. I’m worried however about the receivers not working because they are not registered and then I get into trouble.

Any advice or help would be appreciated Thanks!

  1. Anyone can get them activated on an existing account they already have. As long as they are not stolen you will be fine. People buy them at garage sales and online all the time. I am currently using 2 i bought second hand and it only cost $20 to get cards for them from the company.

  2. With time, Directv changes the cards on the receivers. If those receivers have the old cards ,they won’t work. Thus, whoever you sell them, have to phone Directv to get a new card. If those receivers are cardless type, you have nothing to worry.

If I were you, I will phone DSS and asked them, if you can activate one of those receivers. Pretend you will be a customer. But, don’t sign up. They will tell you if you need a card or not.

Just give them the information of just one. Otherwise, if you don’t do that, some of your clients will be upset with you that you are selling a receivers which need a replacement card.

If you sell them on ebay, maybe put them AS IS. This way, you don’t worry about anything.

    I hope this helps.

  3. The card has to be clean meaning no balance from previous owner and Directv will activate to existing account. They cannot trace unless you plug in phone line. “Split Accounts”
